MariaDB Teaming Up With rasdaman
Bremen, May 2025 -- As a leading open-source database system, MariaDB is continuously extending its functionality. At Constructor University, now a collaboration was kicked off to integrate the rasdaman datacube engine into MariaDB.
Last month, Maria DB invited developers and students to attend the inspiring, hands-on 'Code, Vectors & Vision' Meetup at Constructor University in Bremen - a unique opportunity to explore the worlds of open source, innovation and AI.
Peter Baumann, CEO of rasdaman and Michael “Monty” Widenius, founder of MySQL and MariaDB talked about the impact of expanding the MariaDB Open Source database system with likewise open-source rasdaman community.
Baumann, a leading expert in scientific data management, gave a comprehensive overview in his presentation titled 'Array Databases: Supporting the Fourth Big Data Type', delving into the evolution and significance of array databases for managing complex, multidimensional data efficiently.
He introduced the rasdaman datacube technology, highlighting its algebraic foundation which supports scalable queries on large raster datasets, as well as its application in various scientific fields, particularly the Earth sciences. The discussion covered challenges such as location-transparent federation, temporal semantics in geospatial datacubes, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence.
Live demonstrations enriched the presentation, providing attendees with practical insights into the capabilities and applications of array databases. Through his expertise and engaging presentation, Baumann emphasised the important role of array databases in improving data management practices in various scientific fields.
